Isambard Kingdom Brunel's first project, with his father Sir Marc, scheduled ancient monument and international landmark site, now a museum, the Thames tunnel, the first under a river, is the oldest section in the London underground. Watercolours, peepshows, engravings, statues and models explain this epic feat of engineering. Rotherhithe is a popular destination for visitors, attracted by its long association with London's maritime past. In 1620 the Mayflower set sail from here. Rotherhithe was once a centre for piracy and body snatching.
