The Norman remains of Bungay Castle are to be found right in the centre of Bungay hidden behind the main shopping area next to the Buttercross. Bungay Castle dates back to around 1165 and is the second to be built on the site. A motte was erected in around 1100 but was removed and replaced by a massive Norman keep built by Hugh Bigod. Today only two towers and part of the curtain wall remain. The entrance to the remains of Bungay Castle are via a tea shop and visitor centre.
