About The Nelson Museum and Local History Centre

Horatio Nelson was born in Norfolk, died at sea and is buried in London. However, Monmouth is home to one of the best collections about the famous admiral in the world. Find out about Nelson's life, loves, death and commemoration.
The museum moved to the current premises (a market hall complex built in the 1830s) in 1969, at which time the local history collections for the town were incorporated.
The Nelson collection includes both personal and commemorative material, and is particularly noted for the large number of personal letters. Star exhibits include Nelson's fighting sword, and a selection of outrageous forgeries, including Nelson's 'glass eye'.
The Local History Centre collections are based on the Monmouth Borough archive; the local history reference library; photographs; prints and paintings; maps and plans, models and artefacts, with a special collection relating to the Rolls family (including C.S. Rolls of Rolls Royce).
