Sherborne Museum is a vibrant, community-based museum entirely run by volunteers for the purpose of conserving the heritage of this lovely town and the surrounding villages. Established since 1968, we are fully accredited and occupy a Grade II listed building in what was formerly the almonry and gatehouse of the Benedictine Abbey.
Highlights include a unique medieval wall-painting, a touch-screen version of the lavishly-illuminated Sherborne Missal, silk and gloving displays, tools from disappearing rural trades and crafts, a famous dolls’ house and 200 watercolours of local flora by pioneering Edwardian botanist Diana Ruth Wilson. We have a vast photographic archive which will shortly be made available to the public on a computerised database. For those who cannot use the stairs we have a virtual tour of the upper galleries and a Sensory Trail is in development to further enhance the visitor’s experience. We have strong ties with local schools and actively encourage school visits.
Admission is £1 for adults, free to children under 18, Museum Association Members, the disabled plus one carer and students.
Opening hours:
Summer season from the first week before Easter to a few days before Christmas Tues-Sat 10.30-4.30.
Winter hours are Tues and Thurs a.m. 10.30-12.30 when admission is free.
