At the heart of William the Conqueror’s New Forest on the banks of the Beaulieu River stands Palace House, once the Great Gatehouse of Beaulieu Abbey. The family home of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu, the house contains splendid rooms full of fine portraits, pictures, furniture, family memorabilia and photographs.
The mediaeval Abbey ruins, which date from the 13th century, are extensive, impressive and atmospheric. The surviving monastic buildings house an absorbing exhibition about its history and the day to day life of worship lived there by the Cistercian monks who founded the Abbey in 1204. The former refectory is now the pretty parish church. whilst The Domus, which houses the exhibition, is home to beautiful wall hangings created by Belinda, Lady Montagu, which depict the story of the Abbey since its foundation.
