As its name suggests, the North York Moors National Park has a lot of moorland ' the largest expanse in England in fact and home to all sorts of wildlife. Interspersed with lush green dales, the landscape is an ideal place to walk, cycle, ride a horse or just sit back and soak up some amazing views.
It's not all moorland though, there's also a cracking coastline with majestic cliffs, wide sandy beaches and pretty little fishing villages. You'll also find large swathes of woodland, some carpeted in wild flowers and others with great recreational activities from mountain-biking to tree-top walkways and zip wires.
Popular spots include the coastal villages of Robin Hood's Bay, Runswick Bay and Staithes that appear to be almost hewn out of the surrounding cliff-face, Sutton Bank ' a large escarpment in the south-west of the National Park with stunning views (you can see across to the Yorkshire Dales on a clear day) and Grosmont - a pretty moorland village where you can hop on board a steam train courtesy of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Or to escape the crowds, why not try the Levisham Estate - virtually the North York Moors in miniature with spectacular landforms, ancient woodlands, world-class archaeology, lots of wildlife and, of course, heather moorland. It's here
