About Finsbury Park

Today Finsbury Park is looking better than ever, after undergoing a £5million Heritage Lottery Funded restoration and improvement programme. In recognition of the transformation the Park was awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award in 2007 and has retained it every year since.

Finsbury Park provides a rich tapestry of landscapes and a variety of facilities now catering for twenty-first century needs.

Finsbury Park is the largest park managed by the Council and offers a peaceful green retreat from its urban built-up surroundings. Opening and closing times of the park are dependent on season, but generally the park is open at dawn and locked when it gets dark.

History of Finsbury Park

The grade II listed Park was officially opened in 1869 and continues to evoke its undoubted value as a 'People’s Park'.

Many of the park's original features have been restored to their former glory including the re-landscaping of the American Gardens and Alexander McKenzie’s historical flower gardens, now reflecting much of his original design which was lost for many years.

New facilities

A new outdoor Gym has been completed opposite the American Garden in the north-east of the park (nearest gate is Endymion Rd – turn left onto the Carriageway and the gym is on your right). There are 14 pieces of equipment that provide 20 exercise stations. There is no need for an induction, use is free from dawn to dusk, but at the users own risk. The gym is for everyone aged 12 and over. If you are unsure about taking physical exercise, see you family doctor.

If you visit and a piece of equipment is not working or you would like more information on joining our indoor gyms please contact Parks on 020 8489 1000

Other new facilities include an enclosed, dog-free play area with an exciting water feature - designed by children, for children. A new and improved café building housing public toilets and open all year round, and the construction of two Victorian-styled seating shelters, offering a place for quiet contemplation or protection from the sun or rain. To read more about what's on offer download the Finsbury Park leaflet from the attached files section below.

Furtherfield Gallery - at the Heart of Finsbury Park

Furtherfield Gallery is based in the McKenzie Pavilion near the lake, at the heart of the Park and has established an international reputation as London's first gallery for networked media art since 2004. Furtherfield is a public gallery providing space for exhibitions, activities and events for art, technology and social change. For details on gallery opening times and exhibitions

Sports facilities

Finsbury Park is also very popular for its sporting facilities including the newly built skate-park and the Track and Gym open for drop in sessions and organised team sports.

The newly improved tennis courts cater for both children and adults. All you have to do is turn up and play!

And as if you needed anymore excuses to visit Finsbury Park, it is part of the Better Haringey Walking Trail, so get your walking boots on and come on down!
