The Beautiful Barley Wood Walled Garden is a carefully restored Victorian kitchen garden.
A huge array of vegetables are grown within the walls of the garden as well as an incredible variety of fruiting and flowering plants. Old fashioned espaliers and cordon fruit trees grow up the walls, blossoming in spring to create a lacy blur against the warm brick. The warm and sheltered glasshouses are full of tiny seedlings and, in the summer, tomatoes with their wonderfully evocative smell and gorgeous colours fill the glasshouse.
Walk through the main arch and down an old brick path and you will come across a lily pond teaming with life. Further down the path are the herbaceous borders packed with beautiful flowers. In the summer these borders are a rainbow of breathtaking colours, flowers of all kinds attract butterflies and bees from the neighbouring beehives. This is arguably the most beautiful part of the garden with stunning views across Wrington Vale and the Mendip Hills.
The gardens are open to the public every day.
