About Brougham Castle

In a picturesque setting beside the crossing of the River Eamont, Brougham Castle was founded in the early 13th century by King John's agent Robert de Vieuxpont. His great keep largely survives, amid many later buildings - including the unusual double gatehouse and impressive 'Tower of League' - added by the powerful Clifford family, Wardens of the Marches. Both a formidable barrier against Scots invaders and a prestigious residence, their castle welcomed Edward I in 1300.
A complex of passages and spiral stairways makes Brougham a fascinating castle to explore, as well as an ideal picnic setting: the keep top provides panoramic views over the Eden Valley and the earthworks of the adjacent Roman fort of Brocavum. Having fallen into decay after James I's visit in 1617, the castle was restored by the indomitable Lady Anne Clifford (see also Brough Castle and Countess Pillar). She often visited with her travelling 'court', and died here in 1676. An exhibition highlights her remarkable life, and includes carvings from the Roman fort. There is good wheelchair access to most of the site (excluding the keep).
